I apologize that some of this photo got cut off, but I wanted to go ahead and share it anyway because it is SO powerful. Tenacity, or the ability to hold onto something or to have determination, is a very important trait for people to develop. From an evolutionary standpoint, the tenacity of our species is what has kept us from going extinct. We are great at holding on and figuring out ways to adapt to our environment. Give us enough time, and we will learn and adapt.
When Thomas Edison was reflecting on the process he used to develop the light bulb, he once remarked, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." He also famously said, “Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Those are some truly profound statements and they apply to us, just as much as they apply to our students. We don't want our students to stop learning, and we shouldn't stop encouraging them to try!
This week, think about those students in your class that are having a hard time or may have been falling behind. Make a commitment to give them some EXTRA encouragement this week, but at the same time push them and challenge them to set a goal and achieve it!
